Lithium batteries are only safe when used under the correct conditions. Because they have a high energy density, ignition can take place, which is very violent.
A good BMS monitors the proper conditions and switches off when those conditions are no longer safe.

Fires caused by lithium batteries occur every day. Some are caused by damage to the battery, e.g. by an accident, but others happen 'spontaneously'...
